Ask the average petrol head to name the most exciting McLaren since the legendary F1, and they’ll most likely mention the P1. No major surprises there, as the P1 was not only part of the globally-adored hybrid holy trinity, but it also benefitted from striking good looks and shocking rarity, with just 375 examples rolling out of Woking. However, if you ask us, the P1’s current stratospheric values, mechanical complexity, and exclusivity don’t necessarily make it the driver’s choice of modern McLaren, and we might have found something even better at the upcoming @oldtimergalerietoffen Classic Car Auction in Gstaad on December 29th. This is a 2016 McLaren 657 LT coupe, and there are a few reasons you might prefer to drive this over the P1. While not quite as rare as the P1, only 500 examples were ever made as a tribute to the McLaren F1 GTR Longtail, putting it on the radar of British supercar enthusiasts across the globe. Despite this, 675 LTs can be had for the fraction of the price of a P1, with this example estimated to fetch between 225,000 and 235,000 Swiss francs at auction. Then there’s the specs. Unsurprisingly, the P1’s 986 horsepower hybrid setup trumps the LT’s 675 horsepower twin-turbo V8, but the LT is over 150 kg lighter with a kerb weight of 1,328 kg including fluids. It’s also still plenty quick, capable of hitting 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds before rocketing up to its 330 km/h top speed. Even better, you won’t have to worry about replacing the P1’s battery, which is rumoured to cost around 160,000 dollars. Should you see the McLaren 675 LT’s appeal, this low-mileage 5,200 km example would be a great choice, being ordered by its first owner with exactly the same specifications as Ron Dennis‘ private vehicle, including all available options McLaren Special Operations.
